10 Things to Never Leave Out at an Open House

Having a good Realtor to market your home when you’re trying to sell it is crucial. The goal is to get your home in front of interested buyers which means getting great photos, featuring all of the best qualities about your home and ensuring certain items are out of sight when showing the home. A key component of the marketing plan should be open house events. While your Realtor may be the savviest agent in town, she or he cannot be responsible for protecting your valuables and will need your help putting certain items away to attract a wide variety of buyers. The basic rule of thumb is to make your home feel like a clean, sparse, basic hotel room. You are going to have to pack eventually, so start with these items and you are on your way to a smooth move and quick sale!

Family Photos

When potential buyers are looking around your home, you want the least amount of distractions. You want them imaging their furniture and their family and friends occupying the home. By removing family photos you are helping them envision their new home and at the same time keeping your family members safe from strangers.

Jewelry

This one is a no brainer. Do not leave jewelry or any valuable sitting out. To go a step further, not only should you put these items away, but to take extra precautions, lock them up or removed them from the home.

Pets and Pet Supplies

Max the golden retriever is the love of your family’s life, but realistically, not everyone is a pet lover. Some people are turned off by pets or just knowing that a pet lives in the home. The best bet is to pack up a majority of your pet’s toys and supplies and only keep the most important, hidden in a cabinet or drawer. This includes leashes, poop picker-uppers, litter boxes, beds, etc. This might seem tedious, but if you want to sell your home, you’ll take the time to hide or remove these items.

Electronics (Laptop Computers, Cellphones, Tablets, Gaming Devices, Smart Watches)

Any smaller electronic of value should be hidden or removed from the home. This doesn’t mean large tv’s or stereos, but if you plan on taking the tv wall mount, you either need to remove it and patch the wall or make sure your listing agent knows that you aren’t leaving it for the new owner.

Garage Remotes and Extra Keys

This is a safety measure. When strangers that view your home without a Realtor during your open house, they could be anyone from a neighbor to a random person that saw the open house sign. To be safe, don’t leave garage remotes or extra keys laying around.

Prescription Drugs

Not only should you remove prescription drugs from countertops to tidy up, but it’s probably a good idea to remove them from the medicine cabinets and drawers. Even if a Realtor is showing their clients your home, they cannot always be with them 100% of the time and keeping the temptation hidden is a good idea.

Weapons (Guns, Knives)

Weapons are weapons. Putting them away to be safe is just a good idea.

Mail

Identity theft is a thing that we hope never happens, but it does. Keep all of your mail and important documents put away to prevent what can be prevented.

Expensive Artwork

Expensive artwork never really goes down in value and if it’s something of major value, you will want to go ahead and remove it from your walls.

      Liquor

Not that anyone is going to grab a cocktail from your bar while pursuing your property, but again, removing temptation and clutter, think hotel room, will help you sell your home and bring you peace of mind during the process.

Now that everything has been put away and the house has been cleaned you are ready to show! With peace of mind and a good Realtor, your house will sell in no time! Good luck and happy house hunting!
